Environmental Health & Safety Programs

Environmental Health & Safety maintains regulatory compliance requirements through the use of written policies, programs, and procedures.

Our written programs are established and published in order to comply with applicable local, state, and federal regulations related to safety.

Working Environment

Not only do our programs and services allow us to comply with regulatory requirements, but they also assist departments in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for the entire campus community.

Accident Injury & Incident Investigations and Reporting

Procedures in place to contribute to a safe and healthy work environment, which increase awareness of potentially unsafe acts and conditions, and ensure timely investigations and fact-finding to minimize the potential for future incidents.

Asbestos Management Program

This plan is intended to maintain a safe work environment for all maintenance & construction workers, and the PSU community. By complying with OR-OSHA and OR-DEQ regulations we minimize the potential for exposure during maintenance & construction activities, and removal & disposal of material.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Committed to the entire PSU community, this program is intended to increase the rate of survival of people who have sudden cardiac arrests. This is accomplished through availability of equipment and training to enhance life safety response measures.

Bloodborne Pathogens

The purpose of the exposure control plan is to eliminate or minimize occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens through contact with blood, other bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious material (OPIM).

Building Assessments

Members of EHS perform periodic safety assessments of PSU-owned buildings to ensure the safety of all occupants. These assessments often include, but are not limited to, mechanical, electrical, & janitorial spaces.

Cold Weather

There are a variety of health conditions that can be caused by prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. EHS provides students, staff, and faculty with resources & information on staying safe in cold weather.

Confined Spaces

This program protects employees and contractors through ensuring a safe work environment by identifying all confined spaces on campus.

Electrical Safety

EHS, along with PSU’s Signing Electrical Supervisor, maintains this written program which is designed to protect employees and critical infrastructure from the various electrical hazards.

Ergonomics

EHS is committed to ensuring all employees remain healthy throughout their day-to-day job tasks and activities. This program applies to both office employees and staff primarily based in the field.

Eyewash Safety Shower Testing

Eyewash and safety shower stations are routinely tested by EHS staff to ensure functionality.

Fall Protection

This program is implemented in order to prevent injuries from falls from elevated locations with the intent to identify and address all fall hazards present to workers.

For information and guidance on fire prevention building inspections, hot work permitting, fire system impairments, and fire extinguishers.

Hazard Communication

This program was established to provide communication and training associated with the use of or exposure to hazardous materials in the workplace.

Hearing Conservation

A robust program overseen by EHS which includes identifying hazardous noise and implementing controls to reduce employee exposure, such as hearing protection.

Heat Illness Prevention

This program outlines University procedures and practices aiming to limit heat illness, from individual responsibility to department-wide safety.

Indoor Air Quality

EHS works closely with Facilities & Property Management (FPM) staff to address indoor air quality concerns throughout the entire PSU campus.

Job Hazard Analysis

To assist with identifying and either eliminating or reducing hazards associated with routine jobs/activities, PSU employees should conduct a Job Hazard Analysis for specific tasks.

Lead Exposure Control Program

This program includes the EHS Lead Management Plan, established for employees who may disrupt lead-containing materials during construction or maintenance activities.

Committed to protecting employees and contractors to hazardous energy, EHS maintains this program in accordance with all applicable regulatory standards.

Personal Protective Equipment

To ensure the safety of all employees who work with or around hazards, EHS has established a program to identify those hazards and reduce the likelihood of related injuries and illnesses through the use of PPE.

Respiratory Protection

EHS ensures PSU employees are protected from airborne hazards during their work by implementing this program, which includes procedures for identifying and controlling those hazards.

Safe Driving

This program was implemented by PSU Risk Management and EHS departments to ensure the safety of university authorized drivers (faculty, staff, students, and/or volunteers) and bystanders.

Silica Exposure Control

This program outlines steps to ensure employees and contractors are not exposed to hazardous levels of respirable silica during work activities.

Specialized Mobile Equipment Vehicle Program

Vehicles in this program include Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT), such as forklifts, and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP), such as aerial lifts. EHS ensures the safety of operators and bystanders through special procedures and training.

Water Quality

EHS staff monitor campus building water systems for common contaminants, such as Legionella bacteria and lead. Protocols are maintained for remediation of those sources if results determine levels approaching the maximum contaminant levels are reached.
