The Center for Student Health & Counseling and Campus Rec are excited to announce the 2nd Annual Spring into Wellbeing.

What is Spring into Wellbeing? This week is designed and dedicated to improve the personal health and wellbeing of the campus community by promoting activities aligned with the eight dimensions of wellbeing. The goal is to help campus community members learn how to create positive and life-long relational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, financial, intellectual and physical habits through existing PSU resources and strategically designed events.

Spring into Wellbeing Events

Friday, April 4th:

  • Bring Your Kid to Campus Day | 9:00am - 5:00pm | Various Locations Across Campus - It's the annual Bring Your Kids to Campus Day at Portland State. It’s a special day full of kid-friendly activities hosted by a wide variety of departments, organizations and student clubs to educate and entertain (aka “edu-tain”) your children. The goal is to give your children an idea of what goes on at PSU, in an approachable and child-friendly way.

Monday, April 7th:

  • Drop-In Pickleball | 12:00 - 1:00pm | ASRC Campus Rec Center 2nd Floor Courts -  Simply arrive and participate in the games. No need to book a court or be part of a team or league!
  • Journaling Workshop | 12:00 - 1:30pm | SHAC Health Promotion UCB 340
  • Ask SHAC | 1:00 -2:30pm | Center for Student Health & Counseling UCB 200 - Come visit SHAC, learn about resources, grab some swag, and ask any SHAC related questions you may have. 
  • Zen Float | 2:00 - 3:00pm | Campus Rec Pool - Come for a relaxing float or lap swim during Spring into Wellbeing week. During this hour, lifeguards will play zen, meditation music and we ask pool users to keep volume to a low level. Extra pool floats will be inflated for use.
  • CinemaTherapy Group - Deepening Relationships through Movies | 2:00 - 3:30pm | SHAC Group Room UCB 200 - Participants are expected to watch the movies on their own time during the week prior to attending the group. In-person group time will focus on discussion of the following themes and topics: Increased awareness of one's own role of building trust with others; patterns in relationships with others; connection/disconnection in relationships with others; strategies to deepen connections with others; increase personal confidence and effectiveness in connecting with others; healthy connection building skills, emotional awareness in relationship with others.   • Dietitian Tabling at Campus Rec | 5:00 - 6:00pm | 2nd floor Rec Center, Lobby Near Elevator/Stairs - Visit the Rec Center and stop by the campus dietitian table to learn about the services and resources available to PSU students. Ask questions, gain information, and even sign up for a free nutrition consultation!
  • Cycle & Strength - Group X | 4:00- 5:00pm | Campus Rec ASRC 440/441 - This is an amazing combination workout that incorporates the focus of strength exercises and the cardiovascular boost of cycle. Instructors will lead you through a variety of drills on the bike and strength training exercises off the bike to ensure you get the most out of your workout time. Participants will be set up on the bikes safely and Krank cycles for the upper body can be swapped out for traditional spin bikes if preferred. If you are a new rider, please come 5 minutes early so that you can get properly set up on the bike. 
  • Polyvagal Workshops | 5:30pm - 7:00pm | Virtual Zoom with SHAC Counseling - A Trauma-Informed Nervous System Approach to More Effectively Cope with Anxiety, Depression, and other Emotions - Polyvagal Theory by Stephen Porges is known as the neuroscience of safety and connection, and has had a significant impact on how we heal trauma.  It also provides a useful framework for understanding and effectively dealing with our daily emotional experiences and anxiety.  In this workshop, we will review the core concepts of Polyvagal Theory and learn concrete strategies to help your mood.  Access the Zoom Link
     

Tuesday, April 8th:

  • PSU Wellbeing Resource Fair | 11:00am - 12:30pm | Campus Rec ASRC 3rd Floor Courts - The PSU Wellbeing Resource Fair is your one stop shop for all things wellbeing at PSU. Attend to learn what PSU offers to support student wellbeing, meet staff from a diverse range of PSU departments and services, engage in fun games and activities, enjoy snacks, and win prizes! Event is open to the entire PSU community, no Rec Center membership required. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to learn about on campus wellbeing resources to support students.
  • Gentle Yoga - Group X | 12:00 - 1:00pm | Campus Rec ASRC 440/441 - This slow-paced and alignment-based practice facilitates ease and awareness in the body through using a combination of gentle yin yoga stretches to release tension in the fascia, restorative poses, and breathing and meditation techniques. Gentle Yoga is appropriate for anyone from the absolute beginner to the experienced yogi looking to bring an element of deep relaxation to their practice.
  • Coffee Grounds & Stories | 12:00- 2:00pm | Between SMSU & Cramer Hall - Students are invited to share personal stories or narratives they believe can facilitate their healing journey. The Counseling Services team at SHAC will host an engaging storytelling activity called "reading your coffee cup," a traditional practice from the Middle East and North Africa where one's fortune is interpreted through coffee grounds. This cultural ritual, typically enjoyed during social gatherings, serves as a conversation starter and naturally encourages storytelling in a comfortable, communal setting.
  • Wellbeing Vision Boards | 12:30-2:30 pm | Student Wellbeing Lounge (UCB 340) | Come collage with us! We're making vision boards to manifest our wellbeing in unique and creative ways. Supplies provided!

Wednesday, April 9th:

  • SHAC Dental Screenings | 8:30-10:30 am AND 2:00 -4:00pm | SHAC UCB 309 - SHAC Dental will be providing a no charge dental screening. This is a quick 10-15min, non-invasive, pain free dental screening that helps look at your overall oral health. All attendees will receive a free raffle ticket for a change to win a bag of SHAC swag. 
  • Yoga at the Museum | 9:30am-10:30am |FMH 110: PSU Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art -
    In collaboration with Campus Rec, JSMA at PSU is bringing Yoga at the Museum to students, faculty, and staff of PSU. Practice gentle yoga in a beautiful art-filled setting! Registration opens March 31st.
  • iRest Yoga Nidra | 11:00am - 12:00pm | SHAC Health Promotion Suite UCB 340 - Join us for a relaxing yoga experience. This style of yoga is called iRest Yoga Nidra; it's not a movement yoga but more of a restorative practice to help students learn how to relax their minds and bodies. iRest Yoga Nidra helps with insomnia, stress, anxiety, and depression. 
  • Art Museum Drop-in Events | 11:00 am-5:00 pm | FMH 110: PSU Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art -
    For these these activities, museum staff will engage participants and lead them to the activity:
    • Scavenger Hunt (self-guided, available throughout the day): JSMA at PSU invites you to journey through the current exhibition, Just Playin’ Around! A map and passport will be supplied to help you travel between interactive pieces and discover aspects of the art you won’t want to miss.
    • Reflections (self-guided, available throughout the day): Enjoy a journey through the Just Playin’ Around exhibition and reflect upon it. Reflection questions are designed to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the artwork you encountered. By engaging with these prompts, you can gain new insights and connect more personally with the art.
    • Audio Tour (self-guided, available throughout the day): Did you know that the Just Playin' Around exhibition has an audio tour? Start your journey by scanning the QR codes next to the artists' names. Explore the exhibition at your own pace and delve into the stories behind the artworks. 
  • BRRRING...It's Recess Time! | Lunchtime (12-1:30pm) | Montgomery Plaza - SHAC Counseling Services and SHAC Health Promotion are partnering to host recess in the park (blocks). Come play some of your old favorite playground games like hop scotch, four square, jumping rope, hula hoops, chalk and more! 
  • Full Body Strength - Group X | 12:15-1:00pm | Campus Rec ASRC 440/441 - This full body resistance training class will help you realize your strength through the use of free weights, body bars, and more to work every major muscle group in the body. Instruction and participation focus is on correct lifting techniques, with the use of light to moderate weights and higher repetitions. Use the energy of class to help you reach your goals!
  • Ask SHAC | 1:00 -2:30pm | Center for Student Health & Counseling UCB 200 - Come visit SHAC, learn about resources, grab some swag, and ask any SHAC related questions you may have. 
  • Art Museum Tour | 2:00 - 2:45pm |FMH 110: PSU Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art - Join JSMA at PSU for a public tour of Just Playin' Around, led by Gallery Coordinator Estela Garzón! Featuring the work of 11 contemporary artists, the exhibition is a peephole into some of the many ways in which art is play, play is art, and both are in all of us. Along with learning about the artists' inspiration and techniques, you will be able to interact with art!

  • Pushing Through Procrastination: A SHAC and SASS Discussion | 2-3:30pm | SHAC Health Promotion Lounge, UCB Suite 340 - Join us in a cozy space to discuss procrastination. We will talk through the stigma associated with procrastination, help shift our thinking to understand and normalize procrastination, and workshop actionable steps with fellow peers, a SHAC counseling trainee and SASS academic coach to help navigate procrastination in an individualized way.
  • Trail Mixer: Meet Our Campus Dietitian| 3:00 - 3:45pm | Campus Rec ASRC 440/441 Join us for the Trail Mixer and Mingle with Campus Dietitian, Lisa Carlson at Campus Rec! This is a great opportunity to ask Lisa any questions you have about nutrition and wellness and to schedule a free nutrition/mindful eating consult. Enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks while you chat. Plus, if you RSVP, you'll be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a pair of AirPods! Don't miss out on this fun and informative event!
  • Ecola State Park Tidepool Adventure | Campus Rec Outdoor Program| Ecola State Park - Pre-trip meeting will be taking place on Wednesday, April 9th. Come join us on a trip to the Oregon coastline (Saturday, April 12th) to enjoy the lush wildlife of tide pools! We will hike a 5 mile (8km) out-and-back trail through the lush forested cliffs and sandy beaches of Ecola State Park. Feel free to bring your sketchbook, field notes, or simply your eyes and hands to observe the awe inspiring homes of creatures like starfish, shore crabs, sea urchins, anemones, and more!

Thursday, April 10th:

  • iRest Yoga Nidra | 10:00 - 11:00am | SHAC Health Promotion Suite UCB 340 - Join us for a relaxing yoga experience. This style of yoga is called iRest Yoga Nidra; it's not a movement yoga but more of a restorative practice to help students learn how to relax their minds and bodies. iRest Yoga Nidra helps with insomnia, stress, anxiety, and depression. 
  • Public Health Conference at PSU | 11:00am - 6:00pm |Native American Student and Community Center - The Annual Public Health Week Conference showcases the work of students in the field of public health. The Annual Conference provides an opportunity for students to share their work with peers and public health colleagues. This interdisciplinary event is open to students, faculty, public health professionals, and community members.
  • Test Your Mood | 12:00-2:00pm | SMSU 296/298 - A mental health check-up is just as important as a physical health check-up! SHAC Counseling Services is offering FREE mental health check-ups. Students will take a quick questionnaire that assesses common symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mood related concerns. Once the questionnaire is completed, each student will receive one-on-one feedback from a SHAC counselor on the results. The whole process takes 10-15 minutes. 
  • Drop-In Pickleball | 12:00 - 1:00pm | ASRC Campus Rec Center 2nd Floor Courts - Come into Campus Rec and participate in drop-in pickleball.

  • Kindness Rocks! | 2:00 - 4:00pm | Transfer & Returning Student Resource Center FMH 342 - Spring into Kindness with the Transfer & Returning Student Resource Center (TRSRC). Bring a rock from your favorite place, from river to the desert, and come paint with us! We will have extra rocks available and kindness cards to fill out and give to someone in your community. 
  • Barre -  Group X | 6:30 - 7:15pm | Campus Rec ASRC 440/441 - Barre is a fusion of pilates, yoga, aerobics, and elements of strength training. It is a full body workout that uses light to moderate weights, resistance tubing, a pilates ball, and a mat. Barre improves posture, flexibility, overall body strength, and balance. Come ready to get your body moving and establish new connections with fellow classmates.

Friday, April 11th (Faculty & Staff Friday):

  • Wellbeing Spaces for Faculty/Staff | 10:00am - 3:00pm| SHAC Health Promotion (UCB340) & Mind Spa Suite  (UCB 307) - SHAC is closing our student only wellbeing spaces so our amazing PSU faculty and staff can enjoy them for the day! Come relax and unwind in one of our wellbeing spaces. Faculty and staff have full access the Mind Spa, Wellbeing Lounge and Nap Rooms. 
  • Free Pass at Campus Rec | 7:00am - 8:00pm| Campus Rec ASRC - Come one, come all! Campus Rec is opening their facilities to all non-member faculty and staff to enjoy a free day pass. Participate in a group fitness class, enjoy the weight room, take a swim in the pool, and more! If you're interested in participating in dedicated programming, please find the schedule below:
