Student Health Insurance Plan

Eligibility

All students taking five or more credit hours per term at PSU are eligible for the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan. All students are required to have health insurance that meets PSU Insurance Plan Criteria. Students who drop below five credits in the first two weeks of the term will no longer be eligible for insurance that term.

Automatic Enrollment

If you are covered by the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan, you will be enrolled automatically and charged $1256 (per term)*. See Summer Only below. You will be charged this rate on your PSU student account each term, as long as you are taking five or more credit hours AND do not submit the health insurance waiver application.

Students with Insurance

PSU requires any student taking 5 or more credits per term to maintain comprehensive medical insurance coverage. If a student has their own health insurance, including the OHP, they can submit an application to waive the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan for the current academic year. Waivers must be done every academic year.

Students without Insurance

All students taking 5+ credits per term are required to have comprehensive medical insurance coverage. If you do not have health insurance or your health insurance does not meet the criteria for the waiver application, you will automatically be enrolled in the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan and charged $1256 to your student acct.

THE SPRING WAIVER PERIOD IS CLOSED

If you missed the Spring Waiver Deadline (4/13/25) visit the Missed Waiver Appeal information page for due dates and criteria.  Please note that all late waivers submitted during the Missed Waiver period, will be subject to an audit including verifying your plan was active on the first day of spring term.

Reminder: Students need to do one new waiver every academic year which begins in Fall and ends the following summer.

Domestic Student Health Insurance Requirement & Eligibility

Insurance Requirement 

PSU requires that all domestic students enrolled in five credits* or more per term maintain comprehensive health insurance to ensure that students stay healthy and in the classroom. The Student Health Insurance Plan is major medical health insurance providing preventative, routine, and specialized health benefits. Those who have comparable outside health insurance can apply to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Non-eligible/Restricted Differential Tuition Credits

Some credits, such as those earned during study abroad, the School of Public Health with OHSU, and some continuing education credits are considered Restricted Differential Tuition credits, meaning they do not count toward the 5 credit hours triggering the Student Health Insurance Plan requirement, or count towards eligibility to use SHAC.

Insurance Plan Eligibility

Students registered in five or more credits in a given term are eligible for the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan.

Students who drop below five credits by the end of the second week of the term, will no longer be eligible for the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan for that term. If a student needs to drop all courses for medical reasons but wishes to continue to have the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan, they may contact the insurance team.
