Effective mentoring relationships are critical to developing undergraduate and graduate students. The Center for Internship, Mentoring and Research (CIMR) and Research & Graduate Studies have partnered to launch The Mentoring Academy. This academy will be offered during Fall 2024 as a set of in-person training modules for mentors (faculty, staff and postdoctoral fellows) across disciplines mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and/or junior faculty.
Training modules will be modeled after OHSU's Mentorship Academy, and competencies will be divided into five modules utilizing CIMER’s Entering Mentoring curricula. The Mentoring Academy modules were designed to address NIGMS guidelines. Mentors with varying expertise in mentoring are welcomed to participate in the academy.
Goals of the Mentoring Academy:
Mentors will develop their skills by participating in activities designed to engage productive and culturally responsive mentoring relationships that optimize both mentors' and mentees' success. The Mentoring Academy accelerates the process of becoming an effective mentor by providing mentors with an intellectual framework, an opportunity to experiment with various methods, and a forum to solve mentoring dilemmas with their peers' help. By the end of the 5 in-person module trainings (10 hours total), mentors will have articulated their style and philosophy of mentoring and have a toolbox of strategies to help mentor and mentees establish clear expectations and individual development plans. In addition to the in-person content, participants will have access to a Canvas course with resources to enrich their learning on the topics.
Audience:
Educators (faculty, staff, and post docs) from across the institution who have long-term mentoring relationships with learners (students, postdocs, jr. faculty).
