Aquatics Certifications & Courses

Campus Rec offers a variety of American Red Cross instructional courses for its members that provide certification. Please view our member portal for current classes. Email our Aquatics team at aquatics@pdx.edu for more information or if you are a PSU employee and are interested in taking a certification needed for your job.

Aquatics Courses

Lifeguard Course

The primary purpose of the Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrive and take over.

Non-member price: $300
This course is typically offered on a monthly basis. 

Lifeguard Instructor Course

The Lifeguarding Instructor course trains instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses. Participants must possess a current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED (with Deep Water) certification.

Water Safety Instructor Course

The Water Safety Instructor course, also known as WSI™, trains instructor candidates to teach all of the courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety program to all age groups; plus Learn-to-Swim Levels 4-6 and Adult Swim. This certification is the gold standard and provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors.

Safety Courses

American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED

The purpose of the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program is to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies.  The courses in this program teach skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly ill or injured Adult/Child/Infant until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

Bloodborne Pathogen Training

This course is designed for those who risk on-the-job exposure to blood and other bodily fluids, and teaches participants to understand how bloodborne pathogens are spread. Participants will learn how to avoid exposure and what to do if exposed to infectious materials, including cleanup procedures. The course is one of the requirements of the OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.
