Family Friendly Commencement FAQ
We are excited to invite our student parents and guardians to take part in a special celebration designed just for you and your families. At PSU, we recognize the incredible dedication it takes to balance academics with parenting, and we believe your achievements deserve to be honored in a meaningful and inclusive way.
This event is a chance for you to celebrate your academic journey with your loved ones in a kid-friendly, supportive environment. We welcome you to register and join us as we applaud the hard work, resilience, and success of our student parents and guardians.

Do I need to register in advance?
This event is limited by capacity and pre-registration is required. Registration for Family Friendly Commencement will close May 29th at 10 pm if we do not reach max capacity before then.
Where do I check-in?
Check-in will begin at 1:00 pm in the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom located at 1825 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97201. Guests may use the SW Broadway entrance to Smith Memorial Student Union. Upon arrival, guests will check in and receive instructions.
I can’t attend for the whole day. Can I attend for a portion of it?
You are welcome to stay for the full day from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, or just an hour. Activities are scheduled in a very flexible, drop-in setting, so feel free to come and go as your schedule allows. We will have a guest of honor offer present and ready to share words of encouragement at 2:30 pm.
Who can come to Family Friendly Commencement? Can I bring guests?
The event is open to all PSU graduating students, their children, and loved ones are welcome to attend! There will be space to indicate how many guests will join you when you register to attend the event.
How much does the event cost?
This event is free!
What are the activities?
Families are invited to join graduating students in receiving a family diploma and take a family graduation photo! Commencement regalia will be available for children to wear temporarily for the photo. In addition to the photo session, families are invited to participate in fun crafts, games, and bowling at the Viking Game Room.
Can I drop my children off?
No, parents must stay with their children for all activities.
Will there be storage or rental for strollers?
We are unable to rent or store strollers or any other personal items, please plan to pack light or carry your items with you.
Who sponsors this event?
The event is sponsored by Services for Students with Children.
What are the age restrictions?
There are no age restrictions, however, keep in mind that activities will vary and may require adult supervision and assistance. Please wear appropriate footwear.
