Service Recognition Program

Serve. Track. Get recognized for your service hours as an individual volunteer or with a student organization!

The Student Community Engagement Center is recognizing individual students and PSU-recognized student organizations who are creating positive social change around the community through our Service Recognition Program! Students and/or student organizations who complete and log at least 50 service hours within the year will be recognized for their service to the community at the end-of-year SALPies Student Leadership Awards Ceremony and will receive a certificate acknowledging the hours completed.

    Levels of Recognition:

    Bronze: 50-100 hours 

    Silver: 101-150  hours  

    Gold: 151+  hours

    Note: Service hours are good for one academic year and must be completed between May 15th of prior school year through May 15th of the current school year.
     

    What counts as qualifying service hours?

    Hours being submitted for the Service Recognition Program must meet certain regulations. If you have questions about your particular service, please email volunteer@pdx.edu.

    Qualifications of community service include:

    • Volunteers are unpaid and must be nonpartisan
    • Service involves working with others, facing real life issues, creating positive change around the community
    • Services should be accessible to general community
    • Service hours must be approved by community partner(s) through PSU's Service Opportunities Portal on GivePulse (pdx.givepulse.com); further instructions will be provided once you are express interest.

    Examples of qualifying service:

    • Volunteering with food and clothing drives
    • Working at soup kitchens
    • Providing community-wide daycare
    • Internships that are for no pay or no credit

    Examples of non-qualifying service:

    • Volunteering at a private office
    • Working for an election office and/or political campaign
    • Babysitting
    • Singing for a church choir
    • Fulfilling your responsibilities as an organization officer/role (example: tabling for a club, or fundraising for an organization)
    • Paid Internships
    • Court-ordered/PSU conduct-sanctioned community service

      Serve and track your hours as an individual volunteer

      In order to qualify for individual recognition, students must meet the following criteria by the end of the academic year: 

      • Be a current Portland State University student
      • Be enrolled in at least 3 out of the 4 terms OR be enrolled in the current term in which you apply and complete your hours
      • Maintain a minimum of at least a cumulative 2.5 GPA 
      • Complete and log at least 50 eligible service hours in the GivePulse Service Opportunities System (see below for how to get started). 

      Serve and track your hours as a student organization

      The Student Community Engagement Center is recognizing student organizations who are participating in service projects together! Student organizations who participate together in service project(s) with 3 or more members have the opportunity to be recognized for all their hard work at the end of year SALPies Awards Ceremony! The Student Organization with the most service hours will be honored with the Student Organization Service Award and also be featured on our website!

      In order to qualify for this Service Recognition Program, student organizations must meet the following criteria:

      • Be a SALP recognized student organization group
      • Each service project must have at least 3 current PSU students participating

      Email volunteer@pdx.edu to let us know you are interested in participating in the Service Recognition program along with other members of your student organization to be eligible for the student organization service recognition award. Let us know the name of your group, how many people you anticipate will be participating, and what kinds of projects you have planned or would be interested in getting involved with. We will then get in touch with more information!
