Welcome to Portland State Campus Rec! This page is meant to be a helpful guide to understanding the ins and outs of the Rec Center and all that Campus Rec has to offer. Our facilities and programs are universally designed to provide opportunities for everyone to accomplish their health and wellbeing goals.

Campus Rec offers a variety of programs, events, and activities ranging from fitness, aquatics, and outdoor programming to intramural sports, rec clubs, and drop-in sports. Our trained staff are here to provide you with assistance and support throughout your wellbeing journey.

Building Maps & Features

Portland State's beautiful, modern Rec Center is located in the heart of campus on the Urban Plaza. The Rec Center is on floors 2-4 of the Academic & Student Recreation Center (ASRC).

The Outdoor Program office and Equipment Rental Center are just outside and around the corner from our main Rec Center facility, on the corner of SW 5th Avenue and Harrison Street. Stop by to register for guided outdoor trips for all skill levels, or to rent affordable outdoor gear for your next adventure. Make new friends, learn new skills, and release some tension while enjoying nature.

Sign Waiver

Prior to entering the Rec Center, you must sign a one-time electronic waiver online. Check In at Member Services

A valid PS ID card or ASRC access badge is required in order to access the Rec Center. Swipe in at the Member Services desk on the Second Floor of the Academic & Student Recreation Center (ASRC). If you forget your PSU ID, you may use a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or passport to access the facility. 


Building Access

24/7 Card Access Required

The exterior doors to the Academic & Student Recreation Center (ASRC) are locked at all times and require a valid PSU ID card or ASRC access badge for entry into the building. Remember to bring your ID card or access badge with you to enter the building and swipe in at the Member Services desk. 

If you do not have a valid PSU ID card or ASRC access badge: 

  • Current PSU students, faculty and staff can contact PSU's ID Services in order to obtain a valid PSU ID card.
  • All other Campus Rec members can use an ASRC access badge to access the ASRC building. If you do not have an ASRC access badge, please complete the ASRC Building Request Form.
    • You must have an active Campus Rec membership in order to request an access badge.
    • Access badges cost $21 to cover the cost of printing.
    • After submitting the form, you will be notified when your badge is ready for pickup at Member Services. Please bring a valid photo ID in order to obtain your access badge.

Access Issues

If your PSU student access to the Rec Center is denied, here are some potential reasons: 

  • The Student Rec Fee has not been assessed to your account
  • There is a hold on your account
  • Your class registration has not been processed
  • Your special registration through signature has not been approved through your department
  • You have dropped a class and are no longer a student

If your PSU faculty/staff access to the Rec Center is denied, here are some potential reasons:

  • Your nine-month employment contract has expired and you are no longer receiving a paycheck
  • Your position at Portland State has changed
  • Your are receiving tuition-remission, which does not include the Student Rec Center fee

Lockers & Towels

Lockers

  • Day-use lockers within the men's and women's locker rooms are available to all Rec Center members and guests at no charge. You will need to supply your own lock and remove your belongings when you leave the Rec Center.
  • Day-use digital lockers are available on every floor at no charge. Digital lockers are locked and unlocked with a digital pin code (set by you). 
  • Long-term locker rentals are available in the women’s, men’s, and inclusive locker areas for Campus Rec members to rent for $25 per term in order to store belongings overnight. 

Towels

  • Bring your own towel, or check out a towel at the Equipment Check-Out Desk.
  • Campus Rec members and guests can check out towels for $1 per towel or $5 per month.
  • Return towels to the red bins.

Weight Room

The weight room features over 100 pieces of strength equipment, including free weights, Olympic platforms, squat racks, adjustable benches, and plate loaded machines to facilitate muscle endurance and strengthening. Staff are trained to introduce you to our equipment and answer any questions you may have.

  • Weight Room Orientation - Schedule a free Weight Room Orientation using this Google form.
  • Olympic Lifting - Watch the Olympic Lifting Video and pass the quiz at Member Services in order to obtain a lifting wristband.
  • Exercise Form & Technique - Visit our Exercise Form & Technique YouTube channel for videos put together by our trained staff to help you learn the proper form and technique for various movements and when working with exercise equipment.

Climbing Center

Climbing Center Orientation - Prior to using the Climbing Center, you must watch the Climbing Center orientation video and take the Climbing Center quiz at Member Services in order to obtain a climbing wristband. After completed the quiz, you are welcome to check out a climbing wristband and climbing shoes from the Equipment Check-Out Desk on the Second Floor, and then head up to the Third Floor to climb!

Campus Rec's indoor Climbing Center features a Nicros traversing, bouldering, and climbing wall. The wall is 32-feet high and bouldering is allowed up to 14 feet. The floor surface is covered with seamless Asana crash pads.

Pool & Hot Tub

De-stress, exercise, and have fun in our state-of-the-art, 25-yard pool and 10-person hot tub.

  • A cleansing shower is required before entering the pool and hot tub.
  • Clean clothing that is safe for water sports must be worn to use the pool and hot tub. In addition to swimwear, patrons are welcome to wear head scarfs, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, and long-sleeves.
  • The pool is 25 yards long and 6 lanes wide. Water temperature is kept between 80 and 82 degrees.
  • Swim lanes are drop-in style, and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • General-Use Lanes (Lanes 2-6) 
    • Adaptive Swim Lane (Lane 1): Lane 1 in the Rec Center pool is an adaptive priority swim lane, with an ADA pool lift and stairs, that is available during all lap swim times for persons needing accommodations. Reserve Lane 1 using the Adaptive Swim Lan

Courts

The Rec Center features a two-court gymnasium for drop-in sports and scheduled activities. There is also a synthetic floor multi-activity court equipped with dasher boards for floor hockey and indoor soccer.

Strength & Stretching Areas

There are several stretching areas throughout the facility, including one on the third floor under the open staircase in the Weight Room (shoes required), one at the top of the Weight Room staircase on the fourth floor (shoes required), and one near the north entrance to the indoor track on the fourth floor (shoes optional). 

Cardio Machines

Stay active with over 80 pieces of cardio equipment including treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, Arc trainers, adaptive motion trainers, stepmills, fitness and Krank bicycles, and rowers. If others are waiting to use a machine, we ask that you limit your workout to 30 minutes. 

Indoor Track

Elevated above the courts is our 1/11-mile elevated indoor track. Rain or shine, the three-lane track is available for patrons and guests to engage in a variety of movement types while enjoying breathtaking views of downtown Portland.

Multipurpose Rooms (ASRC 440/441)

Located on the fourth floor of the Rec Center, our two multipurpose rooms (ASRC 440/441 and ASRC 450) are great spaces for Group X classes such as cycle, Zumba, and yoga.  These spaces are also available for Rec Clubs practices and can be used by patrons when there is no scheduled programming taking place.

First Floor

  • Outdoor Program—Southeast side of the Academic & Student Recreation Center, on the corner of SW 5th Ave and Harrison Street at 505 SW Harrison Street.
  • Outdoor Program Equipment Rental Center Loading dock—Next to the Outdoor Program office.
  • Bike Hub—Southwest side; 6th and Harrison.
  • Transportation & Parking Services—West side; right of ASRC entrance and Cafe Yumm.
  • Lobby—Northwest side; two entrances - one above Urban plaza next to Cafe Yumm and another from floor of Urban Plaza.

Second Floor

  • Campus Rec Administrative Office—Northwest side, right of Member Services.
  • Member Services—Northwest side, just right of stairs.
  • Pool—Northeast side, entrance on the left after the gate.
  • Hot Tub—Next to pool.
  • Rec Sports Office—On the right after going through gate, across from locker rooms.
  • Men's and Women's Locker Rooms—On the left side of hall after pool entrance.
  • Academic Classrooms—Southwest side, past Admin office.
  • Universal Changing Rooms with shower—One just outside of the pool doors on the left, and another just inside the pool and to the right.

Third Floor

  • Gymnasium (2 courts)—On right after stairs or left after elevator.
  • Multi-Activity Court (MAC)—On left after entering gymnasium.
  • Weight Room—Left after stairs or right after elevator.
  • Stretching Area—Under the open staircase in the Weight Room; shoes required.
  • Climbing Center—On right after entering weight room area.
  • Mezzanine—To the right after the gymnasium courts.

Fourth Floor

  • 1/11-Mile Elevated Indoor Track—On right from stairs or left from elevator.
  • Cardio Areas—Various cardio equipment, including bikes, treadmills and StairMasters are placed throughout this floor, opposite of the indoor running track.
  • Multipurpose Rooms—Directly left from main stairwell or directly right from elevator; from weight room staircase: two rights, just past the treadmills.
    • Accessible Description of the Multipurpose Rooms: As you enter, you are at the west wall in the southwest corner of the room. Exit at door 440 on the west wall, near the northwest corner of the room. The instructor occupies the north center of the room, and participants occupy three staggered rows in front of the instructor, with the back row against the south wall and one-way paths dividing the rows.
  • South Stretching Area—At the top of the Weight Room staircase and to the left; shoes required.
  • North Stretching Area—From the weight room staircase, take a right and walk past the multipurpose rooms and take a left after the digital lockers. From main stairwell and elevator, take a left past the multipurpose rooms and another left after the digital lockers. Shoes optional.
  • Universal Restroom—Across from spin bikes near the elevator and main stairwell.

Rec Center Tour Request Form

Campus Rec offers guided tours for individuals and groups who request a tour in advance.

  • To make a request for a guided Rec Center tour, please complete the Rec Center Tour Request Form.
  • To make a request for a guided adaptive/inclusive Rec Center tour, please complete the Adaptive/Inclusive Tour Request Form. This tour will feature the adaptive and inclusive facilities, equipment and offerings at the Rec Center. 

Tour requests must be submitted at least five business days prior to the preferred visit date(s). Tour requests received less than five days in advance may or may not be accommodated depending on staff availability. We look forward to showing you around the Rec Center!

In-Person Tours

Self-Guided Tours

  • Individuals can drop-in for a Rec Center tour during facility hours.
  • Obtain a visitor pass from our Member Services desk for a 15-minute self-guided tour. If a staff member is available when you stop by, they can show you around the facility.
  • A Portland State University or government issued photo ID is required before taking a self-guided tour.
  • Visitor passes must be returned to the Member Services desk after your 15-minute self-guided tour.

Guided Tours

  • Campus Rec offers guided in-person tours for individuals and groups who request a tour at least five days in advance. 
  • Requests must be submitted at least five business days prior to the preferred visit dates. Tour requests less than 5 days in advance may or may not be accommodated depending on staff availability. 
  • Please let us know how long you would like your tour to last. Shorter tours can take 15-20 minutes and longer tours can take 30-60 minutes.
  • Tour participants must comply with the tour guidelines below.

Tour Guidelines

  • While face masks are no longer be required in the Rec Center, they are still welcome. We ask that you honor your personal health and wellbeing needs, and respect the choices of others in our community. Thank you for contributing to the safe and welcoming environment of Campus Rec. 
  • No food/drink (other than water) is allowed past the Member Services gate. Glass is never allowed anywhere in the facility.
  • Photography and videography are permitted in the Rec Center for personal and academic use, with the exception of the pool, restroom and locker room spaces, and during Group X fitness classes. Most importantly, please remember that personal privacy of patrons must be respected.
  • Please do not touch equipment without first asking for permission for your safety and the safety of our members.
  • Please stay to the right side of the stairwell and out of pathways and doorways to maintain the flow of traffic.
  • For youth groups, we require one chaperone for every seven youth (ages 17 or under). 

Cancellation Policy – Please contact us at least 48 hours in advance if you are not able to attend your scheduled group tour. Make a quick call to 503-725-2962, or email crecmarketing@pdx.edu. After a no-show, we may not be able to fulfill subsequent requests.

To inquire about reserving space in the Rec Center, please complete the Space Reservation Form. Campus Rec staff will review all submitted information and determine the possibility of hosting the event, tabling, meeting or practice on a case-by-case basis.
