Graduate and Honors College Editorial Fellowships
at the Pacific Historical Review
The Pacific Historical Review offers two 12-month editorial fellowships. One is open to graduate students in history, and one is open to Honors College students (any major). Graduate students in any field of historical study are encouraged to apply. The graduate fellowship provides a university-determined stipend, and a 4-quarter graduate tuition waiver. The Honors College Fellowship is a paid hourly position with an Honors Program determined student account grant.
Graduate Fellow Application | Honors College Editorial Fellowship Application
The Caroline P. Stoel Editorial Fellowship | 12 months beginning in mid-September
This fellowship, endowed in 2001 by the Stoel family, the Wessinger Foundation, Ann and William Swindells, Edmund and Harriett Hayes, and Robert and Cecilia Huntington, carries a university-determined stipend and includes up to 4 quarters of tuition remission, and is awarded to a graduate student in history. The fellow will work on editorial duties. Application Requirements Below.
The John and LaRee Caughey Editorial Fellowship with Tuition Grant | 12 months beginning in mid-September
As a cooperative effort between the PSU University Honors College, The John and LaRee Caughey Foundation, and the Pacific Historical Review, the PHR is happy to offer an undergraduate fellow position to a student currently enrolled in the University Honors College as either a rising junior or rising senior. Students in history (or any major or field of study) are encouraged to apply. The fellowship provides a student account grant paid by the University Honors College, and a weekly hourly position of about 12 hours per week. Application Requirements Below.
Practical Training in Digital and Traditional Publishing
PHR’s fellowship program offers an excellent opportunity to explore careers in history beyond teaching, preparing students for work in the field of historical editing and writing for national, state, and local historical societies and journals, university presses, and more. The skills gained working on the PHR’s cloud-based publishing platform to produce print and digital versions of the journal provide fellows with practical skills for an array of jobs in the publishing field more generally.
Fellows have daily contact with leading scholars across the United States and the world, working with them on bringing their articles and reviews to publication. In this process fellows learn project management, copyediting, developmental editing, and proofreading skills.
Previous fellows have gone on to find rewarding positions in journal editing, public history, and the private sector. Other past fellows have gone on to complete doctoral degrees in history.
GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants will be considered for fellowships depending on availability in any given year. Previous fellows are eligible to apply for a second year of support but will not be given preferential treatment in the application process.
All applications should be submitted as email attachments and should include:
- A cover letter describing the applicant’s academic background, career objectives, intellectual interests, and intended fields of graduate study, as well as the ways that these academic plans and previous experiences relate to the position of editorial fellow. The cover letter should also identify any editorial experience an applicant has had
- A curriculum vitae or resume that details the student's educational background and work history
- One letter of recommendation, preferably from an individual who can speak to the applicant’s academic preparation and capacity for an editorial fellowship. The letter should be sent directly to the PHR (email preferred) or via post and must arrive no later than the application deadline
