All our faculty members are also clinical researchers, who apply their findings directly to the needs of clients. Adult Language and Cognition Lab Dr. Dutta's lab explores cognitive-linguistic outcomes and everyday communication in healthy aging and individuals with acquired brain injuries. Our research focuses on the relationship between cognitive skills, functional communication, and life participation abilities in aphasia, dementia, TBI, and epilepsy. Aphasia Lab Dr. Fergadiotis’ research, which is currently funded by NIDCD (1R01DC015999, 1R01DC018813), is focused on the development of novel, computer adaptive tools to assist professionals with the accurate diagnosis of word retrieval deficits in people with aphasia. Autism and Social Communication Laboratory Dr. Donaldson's lab uses a participatory research method to examine questions related to social communication, social interaction, and friendship from a neurodiversity perspective. The lab explores relationships, the influence of context on interactions and performance, and how social communication is perceived by others. Bilingual Language Research Lab Dr. Kapantzoglou's research focuses on how dual language learners develop language and how they differ from peers with language impairment. Our primary focus is on developing adequate methods of assessment for this population with high diagnostic accuracy. Child Language Learning Center Dr. Quam's lab studies language acquisition in children with typical language development and developmental language disorder; bilingualism; and the memory and learning systems that support language. We conduct our research both in our PSU lab and in the community. Monolingual and Bilingual Speech Lab Dr. Gildersleeve-Neumann's lab explores speech development and disorder in children who speak one or two languages. Our research focuses on typical and atypical children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, speech sound disorder in bilingual children, and childhood apraxia of speech. Speech, Swallowing and Respiration Lab Dr. Britton's lab develops low-cost, efficient assessment tools and interventions to improve respiratory support for speech and swallowing in adults with neurologic disorders. We offer clinical opportunities to students interested in learning more about dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) at OHSU. Stuttering and Telepractice Lab Dr. McGill's lab is funded by the Oregon Scottish Rite and explores the use of telepractice to bridge rural and urban health disparities to evaluate and treat stuttering in children and adults across Oregon.
