Learn about our International and Global Studies Programs

At Portland State University, our International and Global Studies major provides both a global perspective and a deep understanding of major themes and events in global affairs with two available tracks to choose from:

  • In the Global Studies track, students develop an understanding of world cultures, societies, media, and politics within the framework of globalization. Whether going on to graduate school, or a career in the U.S. or abroad, graduates are well-equipped to address global issues of social justice and equity, human rights, labor, and gender protections, environmental change, sovereignty, peaceful alternatives to conflict, and explore ways to make a difference in the world.
  • The International Development Studies track prepares students to understand the challenges that developing nations face in achieving improved living conditions for their inhabitants. In our courses, we emphasize how development is shaped by the intersections of politics, economy, social and political power, and culture at global, national, and regional levels. Our majors acquire a critical understanding of environmental vulnerabilities and socio-economic inequalities in the developing world, grounded in an appreciation of global history. The International Development Studies majors are well-prepared for further graduate education and to work in NGOs and state agencies alike.
