BSME Admission

Students wishing to apply to the Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's Program need to first apply to Portland State University. While students may declare Mechanical Engineering as their major at any time after enrolling at Portland State University, they must request approval in order to being taking Upper Division Courses.

Selective Admissions Overview

Students who have taken the required lower division courses with a selective GPA at or over 2.25 are guaranteed approval to begin taking upper division courses upon request.

Students with a selective GPA of 2.0 - 2.24 are reviewed by the Mechanical & Materials Engineering Department and placed on a customized plan to start their Upper Division coursework.

If you have any questions about this form or program requirements, you may contact the Mechanical & Materials Engineering Department or your Engineering Pathway Advisor, or make an appointment with Upper Division Advisor, Dr. Tretheway

ADMISSION TO THE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING BACHELOR'S PROGRAM

1. REVIEW PROGRAM ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Information regarding admissions eligibility and requirements, deadlines, continuation criteria, and appeals are posted and maintained in the PSU Bulletin. MME also provides course plans to guide students as they map out their educational journey, as well as important information for transfer and post-baccalaureate students. Please thoroughly review the information at these links before applying to the Upper Division.

2. APPLY TO PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY

In addition to the Departmental online application form, students transferring from other institutions must also apply for admission to Portland State University and submit all transcripts from previous institutions to the Office of Admissions. Completing this step early streamlines the process of requesting approval to take Upper Division courses.

3. REQUEST APPROVAL TO TAKE UPPER DIVISION COURSES

When you are nearing completion of your lower division coursework (typically around the end of your sophomore year), complete the request form to begin taking Upper Division courses. In order to begin taking taking Upper Division courses in Fall term, you must complete this request by the April 15th deadline.

Fall Registration

Students who are granted approval to take Upper Division courses will be placed on one of two course plans for their junior year. These two course plans are the ME 313 First Course Plan or the ME 320 First Course Plan. These course plans are designed to maintain a healthy class size and help make sure that seats are available for all students. All juniors will complete the same courses, just in a different order, and still meet prerequisites.

MECOP students are placed on the course plan that aligns with MECOP program requirements.

Transfer students may need to complete their Orientation in order to register. Admitted students are guaranteed seats in the ME courses outlined on their course plan.

By following the assigned course plan, a student is able to complete their Bachelor's Degree in four years. As a reminder, the Department requires students to complete all selective admission courses with a grade of 'C' or better prior to being granted approval to take Upper Division courses.

Students are encouraged to review course prerequisites, which are outlined in the Bulletin.
