Martha Hickey


Professor of Russian, emerita

World Languages and Literatures - Liberal Arts & Sciences

Dr. Hickey taught language and literature courses in Russian and lectured in English on Russian modernism, Soviet and post-Soviet era Russian narrative, and film.  Prior to moving to Portland State in 1992, she taught in the Russian Program at Tufts University.

Dr. Hickey’s research interests center on topics related to 20th-century Russian literature and culture. 

Her study The Writer in Petrograd and the House of Arts (Northwestern University Press, 2009) considers the emerging voices and themes of post-revolutionary Russia, focusing on the writers, artists, and literary theorists who gathered at the House of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1919 to 1922.
