Getting started

All PSU students have two advisors: A university-level pathway advisor and an advisor within the department. Your first advising meeting should be with a Language, Culture, and Meaning Pathway advisor. Then you should meet with the Applied Linguistics advisor.

Step 1: Meet with Pathway Advisor

Applied Linguistics is part of the Language, Culture, and Meaning (LCM) Pathway. Students in the pathway are assigned to an advisor based on the last 2 digits of their PSU ID number.

LCM Pathway advisors can answer questions about university general education and degree requirements, double-dipping course requirements for majors/minors/certificates, academic standing and petitions, referrals to campus services, veteran's certification, and a variety of other prospective student and transfer issues.

Step 2: Meet with Applied Linguistics Faculty Advisor

Janet Cowal, the undergraduate and TESL certificate faculty adviser, assists with course planning for the Applied Linguistics Major, Minor, and TESL Certificate. All students who intend to do the major, minor, or certificate must meet with Janet after meeting with a university pathway advisor.

Email ling.advising@pdx.edu and you will receive an auto-reply with a link to Janet's advising appointment calendar.
