New Faculty Information

Welcome new colleagues! The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) hosts an annual fall event for new faculty who hold academic rank at .50 FTE and above. The event provides opportunities for new faculty to learn about academic priorities, receive information about campus resources, and meet their new colleagues.

The Office of Human Resources offers the New Employee Orientation throughout the year. The program includes the support you'll need right away as a new employee at Portland State. The program also includes information to help you select and enroll in your benefits plans (this does not occur automatically), information about payroll, holidays, vacation, sick time, medical leave, training about critical campus policies, and a brief history about the origins of PSU. If you have recently been hired and have not received an invitation to attend an orientation, please get in touch with Human Resources at 503-725-4926 or email askhrc@pdx.edu.

Faculty should plan to attend both the Fall New Faculty event and the Human Resources New Employee Orientation.

In addition to participating in the orientation programs, we encourage new faculty to create informal networks with their colleagues, ask questions, especially at the departmental level, and review resources found on the Faculty, Dean, and Chair Resources webpage. See the Office of Academic Innovation (OAI) for workshops and discussion sessions designed to support faculty work.

PSU's Center for Executive and Professional Education (CEPE) provides non-credit, professional education via public certificate programs or custom trainings. PSU Staff and Faculty are eligible for 67% off of CEPE courses on a space-available basis. Currently is a weekly newsletter that arrives in your email box most Mondays throughout the academic year, and the Currently webpage serves as a hub for campus information. University Communications creates both the email and the webpage which are full of opportunities to connect with others on campus.

Disability Resource Center (DRC)

As faculty and staff, we share the responsibility to provide an accessible learning environment for all students, including students with disabilities. Here are some tips for how to make your class more accessible and inclusive:

COLLABORATE TO PROVIDE APPROVED ACCOMMODATIONS

After a student has connected with our office, the DRC Access Counselor & Consultants consult with you as needed to ensure equal access in courses is provided while maintaining the academic integrity of the course or program. If the DRC determines a reasonable accommodation is necessary, the DRC will send a Faculty Notification Email alerting you to the approved accommodation(s) to your pdx.edu email.

We appreciate our partnership with faculty in providing accommodations to students. If you need assistance or have concerns that the accommodations interfere with the learning objectives of the course, you should contact the DRC for a collaborative dialogue about how to best serve the student. Under no circumstances should you simply deny an accommodation without communicating with the DRC about alternatives.

CONSIDER UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Please be mindful that proactive accessibility and Universal Design benefits all students, especially when many of us may be feeling uncertain about the world, uncertain about returning to campus, and in need of on-going flexibility. Proactive accessibility goes a long way to ensure everyone has an equitable experience! Here are some ideas that are quick and easy and can help all of your students! The Office of Academic Innovation (OAI) has a wealth of resources for accessible course design, including opportunities for individual consultation, valuable teaching resources for faculty on their OAI+ website (https://oaiplus.pdx.edu/), and tutorials to use technology in a way that benefits all students. OIT has guides and resources for digital accessibility.

INCLUDE AN ACCESS AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

Include the DRC's suggested Access and Inclusion Syllabus Statement in your course syllabus and review it during the first week of each class.

RESPECT CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality regarding a student's disability and/or registration status with the DRC is essential. Do not inquire about a student's diagnosis. You should not announce a student's disability and/or that they use accommodations in class. You should hold individual conversations about accommodations in a respectful and discreet manner.

COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS WHEN APPROACHED

By having a conversation with the student about their accommodations, you can determine how to put the listed accommodations into practice. This conversation should occur at a time and in a place (in person, over the phone, or over video chat) that allows you to provide individualized attention and confidentiality.

SHOW DRC INTRODUCTION VIDEO AND REFER STUDENTS TO THE DRC

We hope you will show the brief Introduction to the DRC video to help students understand a bit more about the ways the DRC may be able to support them throughout the term. When students request disability-related accommodations from you directly, without coming first to the Disability Resource Center (DRC), you must refer them to the DRC so that we can identify reasonable accommodations and make sure they are best supported. Please also email us to let us know you have made the referral. Please see the Reasonable Accommodation and Access Policy for more information.

CONTACT THE DRC WITH CONCERNS

Many accommodations do not require faculty attention, and most of those that do require attention occur without difficulty. However, when an approved accommodation causes concern, either because you have difficulty providing it or you are concerned that it may constitute a fundamental alteration to the academic learning objectives of the course, you should immediately contact the DRC. The DRC will respond promptly with support, suggestions, or reasonable alternative accommodations. To ensure student success, you may not stop providing the original accommodation until a reasonable alternative is in place.
