Portland State University to Offer Undergraduate In-state Tuition Rates to all Registered Members of the 574 Federally Recognized Tribes

Beginning with the fall 2022 academic term, Portland State University enrolled, degree-seeking undergraduate students who are registered members of one of the federally recognized tribes will qualify to pay the equivalent of in-state tuition rates.

Students will see a tuition discount equal to the current out-of-state tuition rate in the financial aid package and on their tuition bill. The current value of this discount is $420 / credit hour, or approximately $19,000 for a student enrolled in 15 hours per term for an entire academic year.

Any student who provided their official tribal residency documentation during their admission process will not have to submit any additional information.

“Portland State offers this benefit to tribal members as part of our ongoing effort to provide a welcoming environment for Indigenous students in downtown Portland,” said Chuck Knepfle, Vice President of Enrollment Management. “This offer of in-state tuition is a small way to honor the legacy of Indigenous nations from across the country.”

In May, Portland State celebrated the Oregon Tribal Student Grant, which will cover college-related expenses during the 2022-23 academic year for eligible students who are enrolled members of Oregon’s nine federally recognized Tribes. The in-state tuition rate for tribal members will increase access for Indigenous students from across the country.

PSU offers a range of programs to support Native populations including scholarships, programs and student groups through the Native American Student & Community Center. PSU’s Indigenous Nations Studies department offers a major and minor in Indigenous Nations and Native American Studies as well as an undergraduate certificate in Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge. OHSU-PSU’s School of Public Health is also launching an Indigenous Health concentration this fall as part of its Public Health Studies program.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is not only a value and a mission of Portland State University, it is the essential framework of who we are and what we do as an institution and community. Global Diversity & Inclusion is the central division that leads and facilitates the continuous quest for inclusive excellence. We structure our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion journey through four pillars: Student Support & Programs, Equity & Compliance, Diversity Advocacy, and Diversity Education & Learning.
