Windows 11 Migration

Starting in the spring of 2025, OIT will require upgrades from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for all Portland State University (PSU) computers.

Microsoft has publicly stated its intent to discontinue security patches for Windows 10 in October 2025. The Windows 11 Migration project team has set a deadline of May 19, 2025, to ensure that any issues with the migration process can be mitigated before the start of the fall term 2025.

Over the next year, OIT will periodically remind users of computer hardware that is deadline and suggest they select a time to perform the upgrade that is least impactful for them.

If you would like to start your upgrade at a time of your choosing, you can do so by: 

  1. Opening Self-Service Software
  2. Selecting the "Operating Systems" tab on the left side, 
  3. Selecting the "Update Windows to PSU Standard - Windows 11" item
  4. Selecting the Install button.

If your computer is not compatible with Windows 11, instead of the item above you will find an item that states:  "Windows 11 Is Not Supported On This Device." OIT recommends that you work with your department to replace the hardware with a newer model that supports Windows 11.

If you choose not to start the upgrade yourself, your computer will receive the upgrade automatically starting on May 19, 2025.

What to Expect From the Update

  • The update may take several hours. 
  • We suggest that you start it before you leave for the day.
  • The update requires a reboot of your computer. Following the reboot, your computer will begin updating and will be unusable until the update is finished, which may take several hours and several additional reboots to complete. 
  • Make sure to plug your computer into power before starting. Do not forcibly turn the system off, close the lid, or reboot manually after the process has begun
  • We suggest that you back up any critical files on your computer to Google Drive.
