David A. Swanson is a Research Scientist with the Population Research Center. Dr. Swanson is also an Edward A. Dickson Emeritus Professor of Sociology from the University of California Riverside, a Faculty Affiliate at the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology at the University of Washington and a Research Fellow at the Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State University. Swanson served as a member of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Scientific Advisory Committee from 2004 to 2010 and chaired the committee from 2009 to 2010. Swanson has held a number of professional association roles, including serving as the General Editor for TheSpringer Series on Demographic Methods and Population Analysis book series, a Deputy Editor of Demography from 2022 to 2025, twice acting as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Demographic Association (from 1995 to ‘97 and again in 2003 to ’07), and serving as the editor of its official journal, Population Research and Policy Review from 2004 to 2007. Recently, he’s served on the program committee for the 2022 annual meeting of the Population Association of America. Swanson has served as an expert witness in courtroom proceedings and testified before Congress, state legislatures and local government bodies. In addition to being a Fulbright specialist in demography, he’s received two Fulbright awards, served as a “Summer at Census” scholar in June 2019 for the U.S. Census Bureau, received the Southern Demographic Association’s E. Walter Terrie Award in both 1999 and in 2016, and received a Vice-Presidential “Hammer Award” in 1998 for work on the development of the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. In addition to receiving more than $2.3 million in grants and contracts, Swanson has produced and co-authored 112 journal articles as well as writing nine books, dealing mainly with demography and concentrating on methods for performing small-scale area estimations and forecasting. He also has edited and co-edited four additional books, with a forthcoming title covering the COVID-19 pandemic. Swanson’s B.Sc. is from Western Washington University, and his Ph.D. and M.A. are from the University of Hawai’i. Swanson also holds a Graduate Diploma in Social Sciences from the University of Stockholm in Sweden.
