Rep. Lisa Reynolds, D-Portland, joined PSU President Stephen Percy on Jan. 6 to present a resolution enacted by the Oregon Legislative Assembly, written to commemorate and recognize Portland State University’s 75th anniversary.

“The members of the Eighty-first Legislative Assembly, commemorate the 75th anniversary of Portland State University and we congratulate PSU, more than 190,000 PSU alumni and all Oregonians on this significant public milestone of service, leadership and contributions to the State of Oregon. Go Viks!” the resolution reads.

PSU was recognized for its history as an access point for veterans returning from World War II, then known as Vanport College, and the institution's resilience in the face of the 1948 Vanport flood. Portland State was officially created as a four-year-public university in 1955 by Gov. Paul Patterson and remains Oregon’s only urban public university.

“Portland State University started from nothing to become a world-class research university and a recognized leader in making social mobility a reality in Oregon,” the resolution reads.

The resolution also commends PSU for continuing to embolden its community to have an impact not only on their own lives but the lives of those around them, creating a meaningful future for everyone.

PSU closed out its 75th year by celebrating the opening of a new building on campus named for Vanport. The Vanport Building is a new community asset and addition to downtown Portland that celebrates the heritage of Vanport along with the lessons that community can teach us today.
