SALPies Award Categories and Criteria
The SALPies awards recognize excellence in student leadership, organizations, and service to Portland State. Each year, SALP convenes an academy of staff, campus partners, and student leaders to confer awards in the nomination categories based on the criteria below.
Student Organization of the Year
A student organization, student operated service, or student media group
- Positive contribution to the university community
- Growth in membership, programs, or services during the academic year
- Acted as a model for other groups in diversity, social responsibility, collaboration, and/or ethics
Breakout Student Organization of the Year
A student organization, student operated service, or student media group
- Positive contribution to the university community
- Growth in membership, programs, or services during the academic year
- Acted as a model for other groups in diversity, social responsibility, collaboration, and/or ethics
- Is being recognized by SALP for the first time, or has made a strong comeback after a period of inactivity or decreased activity
Student Leader of the Year
An individual student leader
- Positive contribution to the university community
- Exemplified excellent leadership skills and organization
- Was a model to other students in diversity, social responsibility, collaboration, and/or ethics
- Exemplified excellence in academics
Emerging Student Leader of the Year
An individual student leader
- Positive contribution to the university community
- Exemplified excellent leadership skills and organization
- Was a model to other students in diversity, social responsibility, collaboration, and/or ethics
- Exemplified excellence in academics
- In their first year in a leadership role in a SLP student organization or program
Outstanding Advocate
An individual student leader
- The student went above and beyond advocating for a particular cause for which they are passionate
- Positive contribution to the university community
- Exemplified excellent leadership skills and organization
- Was a model to other students in diversity, social responsibility, collaboration, and/or ethics
Student Employee of the Year
An individual student leader
- Was an hourly student employee in a SALP program during the academic year
- Has gone above and beyond in commitment, collaboration, teamwork, and/or coordination
- Exemplifies a strong work ethic and provides a positive contribution to their program/group
- Works well with other student staff, supervisors, and customers/stakeholders
Faculty/Community Partner of the Year
A PSU faculty or staff member, or community partner
- Worked with a SALP affiliated group during the academic year
- Helped maintain positive communication within the group and SALP
- Provided guidance, inspiration, support, and perspective to the organization
Event of the Year
An event organized by a SALP student organization or program
- Positive contribution to the university community
- Exemplified excellent leadership skills and organization
- Was successful in regards to attendance, relevance to the organization or program's mission, inspiration, student life contribution, and creativity
