Scholarship Impact Letter Guidelines

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The importance of sharing scholarship impact

Congratulations on receiving your scholarship! Alumni and friends provide scholarship support because they believe in the importance of a college education, and want to invest in the future of Portland State University students. By writing your impact letter, you're letting them know how valued their support is.

A well-written note reflects favorably on you and is important to the scholarship donor, who appreciates learning about you, your goals and future plans. Your note confirms the value of the donor’s contribution and encourages their continued support.

Suggested information to include in your note:

  • Educational background (class year and major)
  • Share how much the scholarship has/will help you (what it means to you personally)
  • Accomplishments/achievements
  • Extracurricular activities (stories about a relevant extracurricular or community service project
  • that impacted your life)
  • Goals and aspirations (your future plans, career you wish to pursue)
  • What you hope to accomplish while at PSU

Tips on writing your note

  • Address your letter to the name of your donor listed below. Look them up by the name of your scholarship. Please use the salutation listed there.
  • Remember that the donor did not select you as the recipient, but provided the funds for the scholarship, i.e. "Thanks for making the Smith Family Scholarship possible......"
  • Be clear and concise; 2-3 paragraphs is sufficient.
  • Double and triple check spelling and grammar. Notes with errors may be returned.
  • In your note, do not include a date.

Thank you!

Thank you for writing your note to your scholarship donor. You are showing PSU’s donors that their support makes a tangible difference in the lives of students like you, which means that we are more likely to increase the amount of scholarship donations in the near future.
