Native American Resident Grant

The Native American Resident Grant (NARG) is awarded to qualifying undergraduate first-time resident applicants who are enrolled citizens of a Federally Recognized Tribe for up to 4 academic years.

Award Amount: $2,100 annually ($700 per quarter)

This award cannot be combined with the Oregon Tribal Student Grant

Eligibility

To qualify for the Native American Resident Grant students must meet the following criteria upon enrollment in their first term at PSU:

  • Current resident of Oregon
  • Admissible to PSU as an undergraduate first-time student
  • Enroll in at least 12 credits per term, including online academic programs
  • Provide documentation verifying enrollment in one of the Federally Recognized Tribes included in the Federal Register. In recognition of Tribal sovereignty PSU only accepts the following document types when determining eligibility:
    • Tribal identification card.
    • A letter issued by a Tribe’s Enrollment Office as proof of enrollment and membership. Documentation of descendancy alone cannot be used to confirm Tribal enrollment and students are responsible for obtaining and submitting the approved document types to demonstrate their enrollment during the admission application process.

How to Demonstrate Eligibility

Students who identify as "Native American or Alaska Native" on their application for admission to PSU will receive communication notifying them to provide documentation to verify their enrollment in a Federally Recognized Tribe.

New Students

Log in to your application portal to submit the Tribal Enrollment Verification Form from your checklist. If you do not see this item in your checklist, you may upload documentation using the Tribal Enrollment Verification Form or submit documentation via email to askres@pdx.edu

Current Students

If you have not previously provided enrollment documentation you may submit documentation directly to the PSU Residency Officer for review at askres@pdx.edu.

Portland State will not apply the discount retroactively for tuition already paid or balances due. Co-admitted students who qualify for the grant will only have the discount applied to PSU courses and credits. Students receiving the Staff Tuition Discount are not eligible for this program.

Deadlines

To be considered for the grant applicants must submit their admissions application on or before the application deadline for their intended start term.

Applicants must submit documentation verifying Tribal enrollment by the end of the first week of the term for which they are admitted.

NARG Notification

A notification will be sent via email confirming their eligibility for the grant. Students whose uploaded documents are not verified will be contacted directly regarding their status with the University.

The grant is automatically applied to financial aid offers upon approval. Students can view the grant on their financial aid offer on their Financial Aid Dashboard once it has been applied.

Maintaining NARG

After a student’s Tribal enrollment is verified they will remain eligible for the duration of their enrollment at PSU. NARG is automatically applied to student accounts prior to the start of each term.
Failure to meet any of these requirements may result in the forfeiture of Native American Resident Grant funding:

  • Maintain status as an Oregon resident and undergraduate student at Portland State
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at PSU
  • Enroll in at least 12 PSU undergraduate credits each standard academic term (fall, winter, and spring)
  • Keep address current and updated in your Student Account.

If circumstances require an enrolled student to be away from PSU for a term or more, and they continue to meet Native American Resident Grant eligibility criteria, they will retain their ability to receive the grant upon re-enrollment so long as they have not exhausted the scholarship’s four-year renewable period, and they continue to meet all other grant eligibility.
