We are happy to announce that Marina Barcelo has been hired as a Field Specialist (Fixed Term) in the School of Social Work at Portland State University beginning July 1, 2022.

Marina is the outgoing Student Inclusion Coordinator at PSU’s School of Social Work, where she provided ongoing student and faculty support, with a specific focus on students of color and first generation students, for nearly seven years. She is grateful to Cimone Schwoeffermann, Bahia Overton, Renee Kim, Lakindra Mitchell Dove, and Andre Pruitt for paving the way. As the Student Inclusion Coordinator, Marina chaired the school’s Equity, Partnership & Inclusion Council, served as a Field Instructor and Academic Advisor, and managed the Mentor Program and our Student Emergency Funds. She also had the privilege to teach in the BSW Program as an Adjunct Instructor.

Before joining PSU’s School of Social Work, Marina worked in the areas of health equity and reproductive justice. Marina was a member of We Are BRAVE, a people of color led coalition working at the intersections of reproductive justice, abortion access, immigrant rights, and tribal sovereignty, and was part of the original team that drafted SB 894 - what would later become HB 3391, the Reproductive Health Equity Act. Marina is a graduate of Oregon Health Authority’s DELTA, an equity and inclusion leadership program for health, community, and policy leaders in Oregon.

Marina recently stepped down as President of the ACLU of Oregon Board of Directors after six years of service. She has also proudly served as a Board Member for Momentum Alliance, The UPRISE Collective, and Pro Choice Oregon, and as an Advisory Council Member for the Oregon Community Foundation’s Latinx Partnership Program.

Marina holds a Master’s of Social Work, a Master’s in Women’s & Gender Studies, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management & Philanthropy from Loyola University Chicago. She is currently obtaining her Childbirth Education Certification through Whole Body Pregnancy in Tacoma, WA.

Marina is a proud, queer mama to two daughers - Carmen Luz and Liliana Sol. She is a DEI Trainer and an aspiring Birth Worker. She enjoys Lord of the Rings, kombucha, and weightlifting.

Please join us in congratulating Marina for her position in the School of Social Work!
