Dr. Gabriel Campbell - Director

Gabriel Campbell, Seed Bank Director

Dr. Gabriel Campbell has been with us since the beginning of 2022 and holds a part time (25% of full time) position as Seed Bank Director. Since joining, he has secured grant funding, performed germination and greenhouse trails, and is teaching a class on plant sampling and seed conservation. He is also updating the seed bank's website, including developing propagation protocols for over 70 species of Pacific Northwest native plant species. This information is currently being made available in the seed bank's new Field Guide to Cultivating Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest, which will eventually be published as a book.

Gabriel also works (75% of full time) as the Botany Program Manager at the Institute for Natural Resources – Oregon Biodiversity Center (INR/ORBIC). There, he is developing plant species profiles for rare plants of southwest Oregon for the United States Forest Service and performing botanical field surveys for multiple Bureau of Land Management projects. Additionally, he is the aquatic botanist for the Oregon Center for Lakes and Reservoirs where he is performing invasive species surveys, writing an aquatic plant field guide, and engaging in aquatic weed outreach.

Gabriel is most interested in the intersection of horticulture and plant conservation/restoration. He has been working with plants for over a decade as a researcher, field botanist, and native plant horticulturalist in academia and in the horticultural industry. He is most proud of having cultivated roughly 400 species of North American native plants. Gabriel is also an amateur plant photographer and likes to frequent used bookstores to look for additions to his library of plant books.
