Luis Perez


Luis G. Pérez earned a BSc in EE degree (5 years EE degree) from Simón Bolívar University in Venezuela in 1979, an MSEE from Central University of Venezuela in 1982, and a Ph.D. from Washington State University (WSU) in 1994. His areas of specialization include power system protection, high-voltage substation design and power system dynamics. Since 1979 he has taught, conducted research, and performed professional engineering work in these areas. After working as a utility operation relay engineer and a project engineer, he served on the faculty of Simón Bolívar University (USB) between 1983 and 2002, where he reached the position of Full Professor of Electrical Engineering. During those years, he was a consultant working on numerous power system studies. He is the author or coauthor of over 40 technical papers published in IEEE Transactions and other institutions’ journals and conference proceedings. He is a senior member of IEEE, a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Washington and has produced numerous technical reports associated with studies of industrial and utility power systems. In the United States, he was honored with the 2001-2002 Schweitzer Visiting Professor at WSU and worked for Washington State University, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories and PTI (Siemens PTI). He currently works full time as Principal Engineer/P&C Advisor in the Department of Protection and Control Engineering of PacifiCorp at Portland, Oregon. He has taught over 150 professional courses in the different areas of Power System Protection in five countries and two languages (50 in the U. S. A.) Dr. Pérez has been an adjunct faculty at Portland State University since 2012, where he teaches Power System Analysis and Power System Protection.
