Jacob Richman

I am a multimedia artist, scholar, and educator fascinated by the interconnectedness of things—sounds with images, places with memories, people with the natural world. I combine video, music, and custom-designed multimedia to create performance, installation, and fixed-media pieces that explore these connections that surround us. My work focuses on emerging media technologies, experimental performance practices, site-specific art, and building community through artistic practice.

I have performed and screened work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence, as well as many venues in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and all around the country. I have presented papers on social practice art, multimedia performance techniques, and audience interaction at numerous conferences and public presentations, and have published articles on site-specific performance practice published at Howlround, and community art making at New Music USA.

For ten years I have been co-director of Tenderloin Opera Company, a Rhode Island-based homeless advocacy music and theater group. I am very interested in homeless advocacy and take seriously my belief in the ability of artistic practice to tell local stories, effect social change, and strengthen community.

I have 10 years teaching experience at University of Michigan, Brown University, and University of Rhode Island, and am excited to work with the talented students at PSU!

I live in Portland with my wife, composer Kirsten Volness, dog Tito, cat Juniper, turtle Terdl, hermit crab Chloë Sevigny, and a bunch of plants.
