Dan Rogers came to PSU in 2001 from Northeastern University. Upon his arrival, he redesigned one of the senior-level undergraduate finance courses to focus on business valuation, and that course has remained his teaching passion over his years at PSU. He enjoys seeing seniors grapple with the challenges of valuing real businesses and relishes the fun of trying to help students make the connections between various pieces of finance as they do their valuations. Recently, he has taken a faculty role within the student-managed fund program. In this position, he assists undergraduate and graduate students as they strive to improve the composition of three different equity portfolios managed for outside investors.

Dan’s business background prior to his doctoral work was with an airline company and a petroleum products distributor. In these settings, he taught himself just enough about oil derivatives to do his work. He decided to learn more through his dissertation by studying the economic rationale of derivatives usage by corporations to hedge price risk (such as airlines using oil derivatives to hedge jet fuel price risk). Not only has this initial study led to a significant career in writing research on corporate hedging, but it also made Dan decide to teach courses in derivatives and hedging at PSU as well.

Dan’s published work includes articles in the Journal of Finance, Financial Management, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Review, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, Journal of Futures Markets, Journal of Commodity Markets, and International Review of Financial Analysis. He has been an active member of the academic finance profession through involvement as an officer of the Eastern Finance Association from 2008 – 2014, including serving as program chair of the Association’s Annual Meeting in 2010. In recent years, he has earned the CFA and CAIA charters and the FRM designation.
