Aoi Nathalia Mizushima is a physician who joined the SHAC medical team in 2014. She is a first generation college grad and was raised by her mother who is Jarocha (native to Xalapa,Veracruz, México) and by her father who is from a rural fishing village (Miyazaki) by the Japan Sea.  She was immersed in the traditional ways of both of her parents throughout her upbringing and while her formal training is in Western medicine, she was raised with a broad holistic sense about where health is rooted.  She understands that people’s perceptions about their well-being is shaped by their sense of community, by cultural and environmental factors and by their unique lived experiences and struggles. Over the last 21 years as a medical provider, she has found fulfillment in fostering a safe space for her patients; one in which she can partner with them as they navigate their health concerns in a setting that is non-judgmental, confidential and one that celebrates them for who they are.

Please know that you do not need to have an injury or a disease to visit here at SHAC. Aoi welcomes you to also make an appointment to come in and talk about what you can do to prevent illness or how to maintain good health.

Dr. Mizushima received her MD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed her residency training in Family Medicine at OHSU.

In her spare time she enjoys cooking, eating, hiking, listening to music, spending time with her family and, (in her pre-pandemic life) traveling.
