Lower Columbia Solutions Group Wins National Award

The Lower Columbia Solutions Group has been awarded the 2020 American Shore & Beach Preservation Association’s (ASBPA) Robert L. Wiegel Coastal Project of the Year Award. This award is given in recognition of a coastal project that has stood the test of time and has shown a positive environmental, social, or recreational benefit.

The Lower Columbia Solutions Group was convened by the National Policy Consensus Center on behalf of the governors of Oregon and Washington in 2002.  The group’s membership includes key federal, state, local, nonprofit, and private sector stakeholders. The group has met periodically for nearly two decades to work collaboratively on beneficial use projects related to maintenance dredging and sediment management in the lower stem of the Columbia River.

The Lower Columbia Solutions Group's success in re-imagining the planning process for the mouth of the Columbia River is being recognized as a model of collaborative science and decision-making. ASBPA Executive Director Derek Brockbank spoke recently with representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the states of Washington and Oregon as part of the "The Capital Beach” national podcast series.
