Suspension of 24/7 CPSO police coverage; enhanced Election Day patrols

Dear Campus Community,

We’re writing today to share two important announcements regarding a temporary change to police officer coverage and enhanced CPSO availability on Election Day.

Suspension of 24/7 police officer coverage
Effective Nov. 1, CPSO is temporarily suspending 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week police officer coverage to campus. Police officer coverage will be available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. The change is the result of a reduction in sworn police officers due to retirements and resignations.

During this time, PSU dispatch officers will still be available 24/7 and will route emergency calls for service and any calls requiring investigations to the City of Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications 911 Center between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Calls will be subsequently routed to the Portland Police Bureau for service and resolution.

PSU’s non-sworn Campus Public Safety Officers will continue to provide the following services 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

  • Medical assistance
  • Safety escorts
  • Responses to fire alarms
  • Responses to reports of vehicle break-ins without suspect information
  • Responses to lost and found property, graffiti or property damage without suspect information

Election Day police officer patrols
We were told by the Portland Police Bureau to anticipate increased protest activity in the off-campus downtown area on Election Day. In response, sworn CPSO police officers will provide 24-hour coverage on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will be supported by non-sworn public safety officers. We are committed to the safety and security of all faculty, staff and students — particularly students who live on our campus. CPSO will monitor the activity and could extend 24-hour coverage additional days if needed.

Thank you for being a part of Portland State University.

Sincerely,

Willie Halliburton
Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety
