PSU 2019: Our guide to campus resources and fall fun

Welcome new and returning Vikings! We’re happy you’re here. Whether you’re feeling mostly nervous or excited, everyone at PSU has your back. 

Here’s your guide to need to know places, campus resources and fall fun.

Student Services

New — and returning — students be sure to visit the newly renovated Fariborz Maseeh Hall (the building formerly known as Neuberger Hall). 

Maseeh Hall is where you can get help with financial aid and scholarships, financial wellnessregistration and recordsadvising and career services and internet and technology issues. If you’re a new student, this academic and students services building is where you’ll get your student ID.

Maseeh Hall is also the new home of the Office of Admissions, the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of World Languages and Literatures, the English Department, the Russian Flagship Program, the School of Art and Design Instructional Studios, the Ooligan Press and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Student Health and Counseling 

Everyone gets sick. That’s why it’s important to know about  The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHAC). Eligible students can access medical, dental and counseling services at SHAC. 

Public Safety

Visit the Campus Public Safety Office (CPSO)’s website to learn about campus safety and emergency procedures; PSU’s laptop security program; how to keep your bike safe; free self-defense classes; the campus safety escort program; and the PSU Alert Notification System.

Bikes, Cars, TriMet

Whether you bike, drive or take public transit to campus, Transportation and Parking Services has got you covered. 

Visit the office or website to buy a student parking pass or a Student Viking Pass for TriMet and C-TRAN. The Fall Term Viking Transit Pass costs $150 and is valid Sept. 20 through Dec. 31. It must be purchased before the end of the second week of classes.

PSU students are also eligible for unlimited free rides on the Portland Streetcar and 90 minutes of daily ride time and unlimited trips on BIKETOWN bikes. 

If you have your own bike, the PSU Bike Hub can help you learn how to ride safely in the city and provide you with tools and resources to fix and maintain your bike, including tire changing workshops every Friday. Bike Hub is also where you can purchase a bike garage permit. 

Millar Library

You can’t miss the Millar Library with its striking curved wall of glass overlooking the peaceful forested South Park Blocks. Besides housing research and study materials, the library also offers quiet study spaces and collaborative areas for groups to meet. 

At the library, you can check out laptops, scientific graphing calculators and other equipment. It’s also home to multiple computer and printing labs, and even a 3D printer. 

Have writer’s block? Need help catching typos? On the library’s second floor, the Writing Center Outpost offers drop-in writing assistance for any stage of the writing process. 

For help with other subjects, visit the Learning Center, also on the second floor, which offers tutoring and academic coaching. 

Computers and Printers

Need a computer? A place to print that paper? Check out the website for the Office of Information Technology (OIT) for computer cluster locations across campus. OIT can also help you troubleshoot your phone, internet or technology issues. OIT is now located in Maseeh Hall. 

Recreation Center

Lift. Run. Climb. Dance. Compete. The Campus Rec Center is open seven days a week and is your place to workout, play, relieve stress and take a break from the books. 

Sitting at the heart of campus, the rec center offers cardio and strength training equipment, an indoor running track, a climbing wall, an aquatic complex, and gym space for basketball, indoor hockey and indoor soccer.

Looking to meet new people? Check out group fitness classesintramural sports teams and special events like Rock Climbing 101 or Splash Mob + Fiesta. 

Want to get off campus? Explore beautiful Oregon with scheduled hikes via The Outdoor Program. Or rent camping, backpacking, kayaking or skiing gear and plan your own outdoor adventure. 

Smith Memorial Student Union 

Think of the Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU) as PSU’s living room. Here you can grab a bite, go bowling or play pool in the Viking Gameroom, visit the University Market or just hang out. 

SMSU also houses offices for student groups and organizations and a variety of student services including: the Dean of Student Life, the Disability Resource CenterDiversity & Multicultural Student Services, the Queer Resource CenterTRiO Support ServicesLa Casa Latina Student Center, the Pacific Islander, Asian & Asian American Student CenterPan-African Commons,  Services for Students with Children, the Veterans Resource Center, the Student Community Engagement CenterStudent Legal Services and the PSU Food Pantry

Associated Students of Portland State 

SMSU is also where you can find the Associated Students of Portland State (ASPSU), PSU’s student government. ASPSU represents all 27,000 PSU students and holds open student Senate meetings every other week. 

Fall Athletics

Get decked out in green and white and cheer on your fellow Vikings this fall as they compete in football, soccer, volleyball, golf and cross-country. Go Viks

Fall Events 

Fall is a busy time on campus with plenty of events that will help you get to know the PSU community. For example, enjoy free food, entertainment and networking as you learn about campus activities at Party in the Park on October 3rd. Check out more fall events on the PSU online calendar. 

Portland State of Mind 

Get in a Portland State of Mind. Be sure not to miss one of the most interesting and innovative events at PSU. Portland State of Mind (PSOM) is PSU’s festival of knowledge and culture. This annual festival runs from Oct. 10 to Oct. 20 and highlights PSU’s special relationship with the city of Portland through dozens of panel discussions, faculty talks, open houses, sporting events and more.
