In a ceremony held Monday evening filled with warmth and appreciation, outgoing PSU Board of Trustees Chair Gregory Hinckley was awarded the prestigious Portland State University Presidential Medal for his exceptional contributions to the university and the community. Outgoing PSU President Stephen Percy presented Hinckley with the esteemed award, reserved for distinguished members of the PSU community who have made a lasting impact, both within the university and beyond.

Hinckley's personal connection to PSU stems from his experiences as a young man, navigating college with limited support. Despite facing hardships, he understood the transformative power of higher education and earned degrees from Claremont McKenna, the University of California San Diego, and Harvard. His illustrious career in finance and technology, culminating with leadership at Mentor Graphics, paved the way for his subsequent devotion to volunteer work and board memberships.

As a PSU board of trustees member, Hinckley's tenure was marked by unprecedented challenges, from presidential transitions to the COVID-19 pandemic and civil justice reckonings. Throughout this period, he exhibited unwavering commitment and leadership, guiding the university through turbulent times.

PSU Foundation President Sarah Schwarz highlighted Hinckley's philanthropic impact, where he and his wife, Mary, were recognized with the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy. Through their generous giving, they supported faculty in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of the Arts, and through various scholarships, including ones benefiting the PSU Chamber Choir. Their contributions culminated in the creation of the Hinckley Professorship of Choir, Music Education & Social Justice endowment, supporting both students and marginalized communities.

In total, Greg and Mary's philanthropy over the years amounted to an extremely generous $2.3 million, reflecting their deep dedication to supporting students and empowering them to make a difference in their communities.

"As board chair, Greg was always there with unbridled energy, problem-solving expertise and wisdom for leadership,” said PSU President Stephen Percy.  “These qualities were extraordinarily useful as we guided PSU through the pandemic and adjusted to the profound changes occuring in higher education."

During the presentation of medals and framed citations, President Percy toasted Hinckley as an extraordinary ally and true friend of Portland State. Grateful for his profound impact and continued support, the university recognized Hinckley's legacy of service, leadership, and generosity, inspiring generations of students to strive for excellence and contribute positively to the world.
