CPSO Chief Tanksley departs; Lt. Schilling will be interim chief

Lt. Joe Schilling

Portland State University is pleased to announce that Lt. Joe Schilling will become the interim Chief of Campus Public Safety (CPSO) effective June 8. He will replace Donnell Tanksley, who has accepted the position of Police Chief for Blaine, Wash. Lt. Schilling has worked at PSU for the last seven years, joining as a sergeant in 2012 and promoted to lieutenant in 2019.

A graduate of University of San Francisco, Lt. Schilling joined the Portland Police Bureau in 1985, working patrol and in charge of bike training for a number of years. He was the Field Training Coordinator in the Training Division for 10 years before retiring in 2010. He and his wife of 39 years have two children and three grandchildren.

“We are sad to see Chief Tanksley leave and are grateful for his leadership of CPSO for the last 18 months,” said Vice President of Finance and Administration Kevin Reynolds. “Many of us have had the opportunity to work with Lt. Schilling over the years and are excited to have him in this interim role and we look forward to continuing our work to provide a safe and inclusive campus for all of our students, staff, faculty and visitors.”
