PSU’s Theater Program presents Caryl Churchill’s adaptation of Swedish playwright August Strindberg’s groundbreaking work, A Dream Play. Written in 1901, it represented an early effort to challenge the dominance of realism on European stages. Strindberg wrote that he “sought to imitate the disjointed yet seemingly logical shape of a dream. Everything can happen, everything is possible and probable.” Churchill’s powerful adaptation speaks succinctly to modern-day concerns about the seemingly insurmountable gap between our hopes and troubling realities.

In A Dream Play, Agnes, the daughter of Hindu god Indra, descends to earth wanting to understand human suffering by becoming human. Her time on Earth moves like a dream. She meets many characters on her journey, but in this dream-life, they split, double, evaporate, and reappear as she and they move through time and space, one moment moving forward, the next moment in the past, or suddenly in a different place, together or apart.
