About the artist

Frederick Heidel (1915–2000) was an Oregon-based painter and arts educator. After studying at the University of Oregon and the Art Institute of Chicago, Heidel served as a professor at Portland State University from 1951 to 1980, and the founding chair of the Department of Art and Architecture.

Although Heidel started his career as a landscape painter, after working in glass factories in Holland during the 1960s, he began exploring the possibilities of fused and laminated glass sculptures. His work has been exhibited in museums nationally and internationally, such as the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, and the Glasgalene Kuhler in Amsterdam, and can be found in Oregon in the collections of the Portland Art Museum, the Coos Art Museum, and the University of Oregon.
