About the artist
George Johanson (b. 1928) is a Portland painter, printmaker, and educator born in Seattle, Washington. He studied at the Museum Art School in Portland (now Pacific Northwest College of Art), where he went on to serve as faculty and head of the printmaking department, retiring in 1980 after 25 years.
Working out of a studio in his home, Johanson always divided his time between painting and printmaking. His subject matter often included figures in interior spaces with cityscapes in the distance and strong surrealist tones. He has had more than 60 one-man shows, and is represented in public and private collections including the Portland Art Museum, the Smithsonian National Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He was given a 60-year retrospective of his work at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, Oregon in 2007.
