Air cleaning

Air cleaning involves the separation or transformation of gas and particle phase contaminants from indoor air. In the HBRL, we study a variety of air cleaning systems, including mechanical filters and activated carbons in laboratory and field environments. We also study "additive" air cleaners, which introduce ions, radicals, and/or oxidants into the indoor space.

Recent HBRL work on indoor air cleaning:

  • A team of researchers in the HBRL recently were selected as a winner in the EPA Cleaner Indoor Air During Wildfires Challenge! Find out more
  • A study of an ionizing air cleaner was recently published in the journal Building and Environment.
