Film faculty Rob Ribera will lead "Italian Cinema In Person," a film-focused education abroad program in Italy in summer 2022.

This course will provide a survey of Italian film history, from the silent period to contemporary work. We will examine major film movements, such as neo-realism alongside the historical shifts such as the “economic miracle” of the 1950s. We will look at landmark films and directors as they connect to these shifts in Italian cinema, charting the evolution of Italian cinema throughout the last 100 years.

While in Italy, we will then visit many of the locations, focusing on their connection to the cultural history of the country and their significance in film history. We will visit key production sites, including Cinecitta. The second part of the course will serve as an immersive experience for students as they connect with the landscapes and spaces depicted in the films, bridging the history with their own personal reflections on these spaces.
