Dr. Mitra Naseh's scholarly work is guided by her previous professional work experience as a staff member of non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies in the Middle East and South Asia. She examines the wellbeing of immigrants and refugees, their economic and social integration, and cognitive conditions associated with the trauma caused by forced migration.

Dr. Naseh is the founding member and research director of the Initiative on Social Work and Forced Migration at FIU and the co-chair of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) “Immigrants and Refugees” cluster as well as the co-convener of the SSWR Special Interest Group on Immigrants and Refugees studies.
