Portland State Film’s Dr. Patrick Terry hosts a screening of Ogigami Naoko’s Rent-a-Cat (2012), courtesy of the Japan Foundation traveling film series, with the Center for Japanese Studies.
In Ogigami Naoko’s Rent-a-Cat, the protagonist, Sayoko, facilitates encounters between people and cats as she calls out, "Cats for rent, for lonely people." But she doesn't just rent her cats out to anyone. She does screenings to determine whether they have the conditions required for renting out a cat. Sayoko has been on good terms with cats since childhood, and is considerate of their feelings as she brings cats together with lonely people. The story unfolds with Sayoko, who goes around renting cats, and the people she encounters. View the trailer.
