The Mark O. Hatfield School of Government invites you to a very special webinar - a public lecture by Professor Theda Skocpol of Harvard University. In this webinar, Professor Skocpol will share her insights and observations on what is happening with democratic governance in light of the anticipated changes under the Federal Government with the current administration, and her advice on how to build democratic resilience. We hope to provide a meaningful learning experience that not only stimulates thought but also inspires action.
About the Speaker
Professor Theda Skocpol is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University. Skocpol is an internationally recognized scholar and has been elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the British Academy. Since the 1990s, her research has focused on health care reform, public policy, and civic engagement amidst the shifting inequalities in American democracy. Among the many books she has authored or co-authored are Diminished Democracy, Health Care Reform and American Politics, and The Tea Party and the Remaking of Republican Conservatism. Her most recent book is Rust Belt Union Blues (with Lainey Newman). In 2009, Skocpol founded the Scholars Strategy Network, a national organization promoting nonpartisan public engagement by university-based scholars with policymakers, civic groups, and journalists.
About the Facilitator
Jim Francesconi is a Senior Fellow at the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. He has worked in Portland for the past 45 years as a community organizer, lawyer, and most recently VP of Government and Public Affairs for Moda Health. His community service includes serving as a Jesuit Volunteer, a Portland City Commissioner, and as member of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education for a decade. Jim’s educational degrees include B.A. Stanford University, JD, University of Oregon Law School. He also recently completed a fellowship with the Advanced Leadership Initiative, Harvard University. He has also served on numerous boards, including the Urban League, United Way, Oregon Business and industries, and the Advisory Board ALI, Harvard University.
