Letter from Tiara Johnson, Director for Emergency Management

The PSU Emergency Management office works to prepare the PSU community, programs, and resources for a range of emergencies including natural hazards (e.g. winter weather, wind storms, earthquake, etc.), human threats (e.g. active shooter situations, cyber attack, etc.), and technological hazards (e.g. utility disruption, fires, etc.).

You often hear emergency managers talk about the “Disaster Cycle”, but how does that apply to what we do on a day-to-day basis? Through preparedness steps and mitigation actions, we can lessen the impact of these hazards and threats. Through developing and exercising emergency response and recovery plans, we identify the protocols and resources needed to deal various hazards or threats, should they occur.

Preparing for emergencies on campus is a shared responsibility among PSU departments/units and individual employees and students. I encourage you to take steps in your life to be better prepared. Maybe that means updating your PSU Alert registration, putting together an emergency kit of supplies, or making non-structural seismic improvements to your home or office; each step is important.

You’ll find information on this site about PSU’s plans as well as resources to guide your own preparedness planning, but please feel free to contact me with any questions.
