Majors

The most common bachelor’s degrees earned by PSU graduates who work in counseling are Child, Youth, and Family Studies, Special Education, Social Work, and Psychology. However, there is no required track for counselor education. Having a bachelor’s degree will likely mean you’ll earn more money sooner and have more options when looking for jobs.

Master's Programs

PSU offers a master’s degree that prepares students for licensure as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC). Within our degree, we offer four specialization areas to hone your skills with the specific population or setting of your choice. PSU also offers a post-master’s graduate certificate for mental health professionals who want to become licensed as school counselors.

The program consists of core foundation courses, an intensive on-campus practicum training clinic experience, interpersonal growth experiences, advanced theory and practice courses, and a culminating half-time field internship placement.

Clinical Mental Health

Get the skills to work with a variety of clients within mental health agencies, community counseling agencies, employee assistance programs, day treatment, and inpatient hospital settings, and private practice.

Clinical Rehabilitation

Through this program, you’ll get the skills to work in a wide variety of vocational rehabilitation, mental health, and educational settings with individuals who are emotionally, socially, and vocationally adjusting to the disability experience.

Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling

Through this program, you’ll become a relationship and family counselor with the research and practical background to work with a diversity of marriage, partnership, relationship, and family compositions. Program completion can lead to state licensure.

School Counseling

School counselors work to maximize student success, promoting access and equity for all students. PSU’s school counseling master’s program prepares professional school counselors to work in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade public and private schools.

School Counseling Certificate for Post-Master's Students

If you already hold a clinical master’s degree, complete this streamlined program to move into the school system. This graduate certificate prepares post-master’s students with their preliminary school counseling license and is designed to meet the requirements for the preliminary school counselor license.
