Coupled Natural-Human Systems

In 2019 a group of Smart Team researchers, led by Aaron Ramirez of Reed College, received a $1.5M grant from the NSF's 'Coupled Natural-Human Systems' program (now called 'Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems') to look at current and future implications of past discrimination in urban planning in Portland and other US cities.

Historically racist policies (such as redlining) have prevented disadvantaged neighborhoods from access the health-affirming benefits of trees and parks. This four-year project will engage with community members, tree scientists, and government agencies to help inform policy and create a more green, healthy, and equitable city.
