Annie Lindgren

Portland State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Annie Lindgren as the Associate Vice President for Research, effective immediately.

Lindgren has been serving as the interim Associate Vice President for Research (AVPR) since November 1, 2023.

"Dr. Lindgren has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision in her interim role," said Rick Tankersley, PSU Vice President for Research and Graduate Programs. "Her permanent appointment as Associate Vice President for Research is a testament to her outstanding contributions and our confidence in her ability to further advance PSU's research mission."

In her role as AVPR, Lindgren will play a pivotal role in advancing PSU's interdisciplinary research initiatives and faculty professional development. She will work closely with the Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies, academic leadership, and the broader university community to elevate PSU's research profile in both scale and distinction.

In this capacity, Lindgren will focus on expanding research development support and professional development opportunities for faculty to enhance grant-seeking success. She will spearhead efforts to foster interdisciplinary team-based research proposals, nurturing early and mid-career faculty through comprehensive training and mentorship programs. Lindgren will also oversee the administration of institutional funding programs such as seed grants to stimulate innovative research. Additionally, she will serve as a liaison with community partners, industry stakeholders, and governmental bodies, working to enhance the societal impact of PSU's research and align the university's research enterprise with broader institutional goals and vision.

"I am honored to accept this permanent position and excited to continue working with the talented Research & Graduate Studies staff and the broader PSU community," Lindgren said. "My goal is to further strengthen PSU's research infrastructure, support our faculty and students in their innovative work, and expand our collaborative partnerships. I'm particularly enthusiastic about enhancing our research development support and professional development programs for faculty, which will be crucial in growing our research enterprise and aligning it with PSU's broader institutional goals and vision."

Prior to her interim appointment, Lindgren served as the Director for the Center for Life in Extreme Environments (CLEE) at PSU. Under her leadership, CLEE became the first formal research center in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, with 15 faculty members spanning Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Communication. The center mentors and trains over 60 students each year and engages with both internal and external stakeholders, averaging over $1 million in research expenditures annually and generating over $30 million in grant revenue since 2011.

Lindgren's expertise in interdisciplinary research and her proven track record of fostering collaboration across academic fields have been instrumental in her success as Interim AVPR. She has continued to build partnerships with external organizations and has been a driving force in elevating PSU's research presence locally, nationally, and internationally.

Lindgren holds a BS and MS in Biology from New Mexico State University and a Ph.D. in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology from The Ohio State University. Before joining PSU, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher and an NSF Biological Informatics Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
