We are proud to announce that Peyman Abbaszadeh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), has been awarded a $493,371 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance climate modeling and Earth system predictability. Dr. Abbaszadeh, the PI, will collaborate with scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) simulations by utilizing satellite observations and addressing uncertainties across different layers of E3SM model.

The project will focus on improving E3SM’s Land Model (ELM) through the integration of Machine Learning-enhanced Data Assimilation techniques. This work will specifically target improving predictions of mountain snowpack and streamflow in the western United States, as well as drought conditions in the Great Plains.

“This project has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of land-atmosphere interactions and the role they play in climate predictions. By reducing uncertainties in Earth System Models, we hope to provide more reliable predictions, which are essential for preparing for extreme events such as droughts and floods,” said Dr. Abbaszadeh.

Congratulations to Dr. Abbaszadeh!
