Dr. Washington’s research focuses on the processes of organizational and institutional change. Over the past 20 years, he has concentrated his focus mainly on organized amateur and collegiate sports, however he has also studied settings as diverse as Italian lawyers, mega-churches, and government leaders from Botswana. Dr. Washington’s research has been published in leading academic journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Organizational Science, Organizational Studies, Journal of Sport Management, and Sport Management Review. Dr. Washington is a fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management. Dr. Washington has been editor of Journal of Management Inquiry, Journal of Sport Management and was a senior associate editor of Organizational Studies. In addition to his academic focus, Dr. Washington has also worked with organizations as diverse as Alberta Health Services, RCMP, Government of Botswana and the State of Oregon to help them navigate organizational change and improve their leadership development. This work has resulted in the publication of three practitioner focused books on organizational change, teamwork, and leadership development.
