Each year, Brigham Young University (BYU) publishes a database of research productivity rankings for the accounting departments of universities around the world. These rankings are pulled from publications in 12 leading accounting journals and are based on data spanning the most recent six years, the past 12 years, and since 1990, when the rankings were first established.

The 2024 Accounting Research Rankings from BYU recently showcased how Portland State University accounting research has made outstanding contributions to the field. PSU is currently ranked 5th in experimental tax research and 9th in accounting education research. Additionally, the university achieved strong rankings in other domains, including experimental research.

PSU has demonstrated significant progress in both experimental tax research and accounting education research. The university has advanced from 16th to 7th place in experimental tax research in 2023, and now holds 5th place in the latest rankings out of the 79 schools that were ranked. Similarly, PSU’s ranking in accounting education research has increased from 18th to 9th place out of the 474 schools that were ranked between 2023 and 2024.

Accounting Professor and Retzlaff Director of Accounting Elizabeth Almer explains, "This recognition from BYU's prestigious accounting research rankings underscores Portland State University's role as a leader in accounting education and tax research. Achieving top rankings among hundreds of institutions highlights the remarkable contributions of our dedicated faculty and our commitment to advancing the field of taxation and providing high quality accounting education to all students."

These achievements reflect the continued success of the Accounting department at PSU’s The School of Business, which has enhanced its academic standing. The department's sustained growth in these rankings is a testament to the expertise and dedication of its faculty.
