The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program at Portland State is a National
Science Foundation (NSF) supported program that supports the academic success of historically excluded
students in STEM. Since 2009, LSAMP has facilitated opportunities for students of color to build their
academic and technical skill sets through paid research experiences. These are meant to be initial research
experiences to help familiarize students with scientific research while boosting their confidence and
preparation to seek additional opportunities. There is no specific class standing requirement. One of our past
scholars, Juan Pablo, went on to complete an NSF research experience at the University of Nebraska, earned
his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, and is currently working at Intel as a structural engineer.
Program Proposal and Goals
- You will join a cohort of fellow LSAMP members and participate in a supportive undergraduate student
research experience as you explore research. - The LSAMP Research Scholars Program will meet you where you are and ensure you receive the
service, support, and mentorship you need to succeed in the program. - As part of the LSAMP Research Scholars Program, you will engage in program workshops and activities
led by the Research Scholars Program Coordinator to support your undergraduate research
opportunities in STEM. - The research experience will be over the course of three terms, i.e., Fall 2024, Winter and Spring 2025.
- As an LSAMP Research Scholar, you will commit to 10 hours/week in a research lab; for each term
of research, you will receive a stipend of $3000.
