The minor mathematics for middle school teachers is for students pursuing a career as a middle school math teacher.
Our minor provides you with training in math and the skills and strategies you'll need to become an effective and engaging math teacher.
Most of our students enter the Graduate Teaching Education Program (GTEP) and become licensed in middle school mathematics.
About the Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics
The Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics is composed of 33 faculty and an average of 36 graduate teaching and research assistants and 16 adjuncts, 500 undergraduate students and 100+ graduate students were enrolled in our programs. Department is dedicated to excellence in research and teaching in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Guided by the mission of Portland State University and by the principles of disciplinary excellence and cross-disciplinary engagement. We are particularly committed to building expertise and providing leadership in such areas as applied and computational mathematics and statistics and mathematics education.
The program includes courses in the following topics:
- number theory
- problem-solving
- probability and statistics
- arithmetic and algebra
- geometry
- calculus concepts
You'll gain a broad knowledge base to draw from when making lesson plans for your future classroom. Our faculty take a hands-on approach to learning and model their classrooms in the way they believe you should teach middle school math.
Our faculty do research on:
- mathematical knowledge for teaching
- student learning in the middle grades
- elementary and middle school mathematics teacher education
